Research involving the Black community in the UK has faced significant inequalities. Studies have shown that Black individuals are often underrepresented in research, and when they are included, the research may not fully address their specific needs or experiences. This can lead to a lack of relevant data and insights that could improve health outcomes for Black communities.

Additionally, broader research efforts tend to lump ethnic categories into one BAME pot, thus failing to disaggregate data beyond this broad category, making it difficult to understand the unique challenges faced by different Black subgroups.

This lack of detailed data often obscures important differences and contributes to inadequate policy responses.

What Solutions is O5BM organisation providing

The Over 50s Black Men Forum is addressing research inequalities through several impactful actions, such as:

1. Promoting Inclusive Research Practices
   • Advocate for the inclusion of Black men over 50 in research studies to ensure their experiences and needs are adequately represented.
   • Partner with academic institutions and research organisations to develop studies that specifically focus on the health, social, and economic issues faced by older Black men.
2. Demanding Transparency and Accountability
   • Push for transparency in the research process, including the methods used, the demographics of participants, and the intended use of findings.
3. Empowering Community-Driven Research
   • Encourage and support community-led research initiatives where older Black men are actively involved in designing, conducting, and analysing studies.
   • Create opportunities for members to receive training in research methods and participate as community researchers.
4. Facilitating Community Engagement and Feedback: establish forums and feedback mechanisms where community members can voice their concerns about research practices and propose areas for study.
5. Publishing and Dissemination of Research: Sharing findings through reports, articles, and presentations to ensure awareness about the specific issues faced by older Black men and influence future research directions.
