Saturday, 2 August 2025 | Luton, UK – The Over 50s Black Men Forum (O5BM) proudly launched its seventh Community Table Tennis Centre at the Lewsey Farm Learning Centre in Luton North. The event was a vibrant and well-attended celebration of physical activity, connection, and community wellbeing, supported by local leaders, health advocates, and residents.

This latest centre underscores O5BM’s commitment to promoting active lifestyles and reducing health inequalities, in line with Sport England’s Movement Fund policies. The Luton North centre is proudly supported by Sport England, whose backing reflects growing recognition of the value of culturally responsive and grassroots-led physical activity initiatives.

Running from 8:00am to 10:30am, the morning event brought together older Black men from across the borough to celebrate the power of sport as a tool for improving both physical and mental health.

We were deeply honoured to welcome Dr Trevor Adams, a Luton Community Lead, and Mr Bob Baker, CEO of Heritage Associates – two longstanding supporters whose leadership and encouragement have played a vital role in making this project a reality.

We were also pleased to welcome Councillor Jacqueline Burnett (Luton Council) and former Deputy Mayor Councillor Babatunde Ajisola. Also in attendance were Sandra Gouldbourne, Community Engagement Officer at Healthwatch Luton, and Antonio Johnson, a Consultant in Psychiatry at the NHS and a respected community advocate for inclusive community development.

As part of its wider vision, O5BM continues to create safe and engaging spaces where older Black men can stay active, socially connected, and mentally resilient. “This centre isn’t just about table tennis,” said a spokesperson. “It’s about giving older men a reason to move, a reason to laugh, and a space to belong. We are creating a new rhythm of health and community every Saturday morning.”

Weekly free table tennis sessions will run every Saturday from 8:00am to 10:30am, offering a consistent, accessible, and enjoyable way for older men to stay physically and socially engaged.

Special thanks to Mr Edward King, Manager of Lewsey Farm Learning Centre, and his team for providing a welcoming home for the initiative. Their support, hospitality, and partnership have been essential in bringing this centre to life.

The event concluded with smiles, laughter, and several friendly table tennis matches – a perfect beginning to what promises to be a dynamic, health-boosting space for older Black men in the Luton North community.
